1.0 Is the Loneliest Number — Matt Mullenweg
Not a new essay, but one of my favourites. From Matt Mullenweg, creator of WordPress, about overcoming perfectionism and releasing a 1.0 when “good enough”.
I imagine prior to the launch of the iPod, or the iPhone, there were teams saying the same thing: the copy + paste guys are *so close* to being ready and we know Walt Mossberg is going to ding us for this so let’s just not ship to the manufacturers in China for just a few more weeks… The Apple teams were probably embarrassed. But if you’re not embarrassed when you ship your first version you waited too long.
It was kind of the inspiration for launching the redesign of this blog in fact, before our new Key Options colours and identity had been finalised. For me, it was more important getting the blog out the door with a few rough edges, then waiting for that day far in the future when everything was just right.
